WHAT animal is black and white, and spends 10 hours every day eating bamboo? It is the giant panda!
GIANT pandas live in the mountainous areas of southwestern China (中國), mainly in Sichuan (四川) province. There are only about 2,000 pandas in the wild they are an endangered species. The Chinese government has set up nature reserves to look after them.
Gifts for friends
CHINA sometimes gives giant pandas to other places as gifts to improve relations. For example, the US (美國) has received giant pandas from China; so has Taiwan(台灣). China gave Hong Kong four giant pandas. They live in Ocean Park (海洋公園).
Looking after junior
A GIANT panda usually gives birth to only one cub at a time. It is because a mother panda gives so much love and attention to her cub that she can only look after one baby. She usually takes care of her cub for about two years to makes sure it survives.
GIANT pandas mostly eat bamboo. But bamboo is low in nutrients so pandas must eat about 38 kilograms of it every day. They also eat eggs, fish, yams and bananas. Those living in zoos and reserves have special diets so they get all the right nutrients.
