THERE may be up to 1 million refugees from various countries, mainly Syria (敍利亞), that will enter Germany (德國) this year. About 40 percent of them are children. But almost all of them do not know any German (德文) at all.
To help these poor kids, the German (德國的) government is offering 'welcome classes' for the refugee kids. Here, the little ones can learn the basics of the German language before they join regular classes with local kids 6 to 8 months later.
As new school year began last month, the number of non-German speaking children increased by 70 percent in Berlin (柏林) alone. Such 'welcome classes' are really necessary.
