THE Taiwanese (台灣的) government thinks kids are spending too much time in front of televisions, computers, smartphones and other electronic gadgets. It believes this habit is affecting the physical and mental health of children and youths.

Since it is a health problem, the government says it can and should do something about it. Therefore, a law was passed last month. If a kid spends too much time in front of the screen, parents could be fined up to 50,000 New Taiwan dollars, which is about HK$12,500! But how much time is too much? This has not been decided yet. Another question is whether the government can really enforce the law, when most children use these electronic gadgets at home.
