YOU may love junk food, such as potato chips. But did you know that urban ants might love junk food as much as you do? Researchers at North Carolina State University (北卡羅萊納州立大學), US (美國) collected 100 specimens of 21 ant species and measured the levels of a form of chemical element called ‘carbon 13’ (碳十三) in their bodies.
A lot of processed food contains a large amount of this substance. They found that some of the ant species had a high level of carbon 13. This means that they eat a lot of junk food. Scientists believe that ants do so in order to survive because there is not enough natural food for them in the city.
