Scientists could clone extinct animal 2014.12.03

MAMMOTHS (毛象) were animals that looked a bit like large elephants but they were covered with fur. They lived thousands of years ago and are now extinct. Now, a dead mammoth that was frozen in ice for 40,000 years may help scientists bring this ancient animal back to life!

The mammoth body was found on an island in Russia (俄羅斯) last year. The body was so well preserved that a liquid that looked like blood oozed out of it when it was discovered! This made scientists in South Korea (南韓) very excited because fresh blood cells may contain DNA (脫氧核糖核酸). This is genetic information about a living thing. If they can find just one complete piece of DNA from the mammoth, the animal might be able to be cloned.

To clone an animal is to create an exact copy of it. Genetic information from a cell is inserted into the egg of another animal. The second animal then gives birth to an exact genetic copy of the first one.
